Friday Flower Feature - The Coneflower

This week’s Friday Flower Feature showcases the bright and colourful coneflower! These perennials are daisy like with their raised centres. They are well known to attract birds and butterflies! Coneflowers tend to bloom midsummer, are relatively drought-tolerant, and make great cut flowers!
Planting care includes planting the seeds in a spot that will receive full sun, however, they can tolerate some shade. Coneflowers are able to be moved from an indoor potted plant as well.
Coneflowers should be watered regularly during the summer, unless you receive more than an inch of rain per week. Additional care tips include:
- If your plant goes floppy, cut them to the ground after the flower- Continually cut off the dead/faded flowers to prolong the coneflowers blooming season.
- If you want to attract birds keep the late season flowers on the plant to mature.
- Divide your plants into clumps every 3-4 years - please note that coneflowers do not like excessive disturbance.
Did you know that applying an infusion of coneflower will help soothe a sunburn?
