Friday Flower Feature - Marigolds

This week’s Friday Flower Feature is the beautiful Marigold! This cheerful annual is one of the easiest flowers to grow! It’s ability to bloom brightly all summer long makes it a popular garden pick.
Marigolds thrive in full sunshine and can often withstand very hot summers. They do best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil but can grow in almost any soil. Marigolds begin to sprout within days in warm weather and bloom after approximately 8 weeks. Take care to space your marigolds properly, if grown in containers they can become crowded. Once established, pinch off the tops of your marigolds to encourage them to grow bushier to prevent the plants from becoming leggy and encourage blooming.
When caring for your marigolds allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Do not water them from overhead but rather at the base of the plant as excess water on the leaves can lead to powdery mildew. You do not need to fertilize your marigolds during growth as too rich of a diet stimulates lush foliage at the expense of the flowers.
Marigolds can be used for cut flower arrangements or dried for long lasting flower arrangements. They come in a variety of colours and sizes and make a great companion plant for any garden. What are your marigold planting and care tips?
