Friday Flower Feature - Hibiscus

This week’s Friday Flower Feature is the hibiscus. Known for it’s tropical showy flower, the Hibiscus comes in a variety of colour combinations. Our Saskatchewan summers are hot and beautiful, but they can be dry as well. This plant loves moist soil, so don't forget to water daily during heat waves and don't let the soil dry out! A natural Mulch can also help retain moisture.
These plants can make it through the winter if you bring them inside. The room should stay above 50 degrees F and should offer sunlight. Hibiscus plants need less water over winter than they do in the summer, so only water when dry to the touch.
Yellow leaves are to be expected when winterizing a Hibiscus. If all the leaves fall off, not to worry, your plant may be in full dormancy. You can check the branches and if they are not brittle and snap in half easily, your plant is just taking a snooze and waiting for spring! I wish I could do that! At this time you can store in a cool, dark place until spring.
Hummingbirds and butterflies are very attracted to Hibiscus flowers! Which can be a good deterrent for rabbits and deer if you are living out in the country and these two are eating up your gardens.
