This week’s Friday Flower Feature is the Carnation. This flower expresses love, fascination, and distinction. An easy flower to grow, Carnations generally grow to be between 18” and 24” tall. There are over 300 species of Carnations, the most common colours are white, pink, and red. Carnations come in annual, biennial, and perennial varieties and can be planted in flower beds, border, rock gardens, and containers. They also have a very long vase life, lasting up to 2-3 weeks.
Growing carnations does not require much labour, growing and care tips include:
Providing adequate sunlight - carnations need full sunlight, about 4-5 hours per day.
Your soil should be well drained and slightly alkaline. Water your carnations in the hot months, but be careful to not make the soil too wet as this can create yellow foliage. To avoid this, spray your plants with water instead of splashing.
Carnations may be put in pots until planting in spring.
Any spent flowers should be removed to promote continued blooming. The quality of the bloom depends on the soil and irrigation.
There are so many beautiful varieties of carnations and each colour has a different meaning. With proper care these beautiful flowers will make a great addition to your garden and as beautiful cut flowers in your home.
