Friday Flower Feature - Calla Lillies
It’s time for another Friday Flower Feature and today we are talking Calla Lilies!
These are stunning perennial bulbs that add simple elegance to any garden and are great for fresh cut flowers. Being a tropical plant, these perennials do need special care and attention in fall to properly winterize the bulbs. I personally like to go with a low maintenance option and I keep mine in pots! Once the flowers are done and cool weather starts cut off all the foliage above the soil, let dry out, cover, and store in a cool dark space in my house. Once March comes set the pots in a warm sunny window, water and voila healthy new growth starts to appear! To climatize set outside in a sunny location during the day and bring them back in at night. Only leave overnight when the threat of evening frost is over.
If you plant your Calla’s in the ground you will want to follow these simple steps.
1- Wait until the first frost and cut back the growth to about 2-3 inches above the ground.
2- Dig out the Calla rhizomes by digging a wide hole around the plant - bigger is always better to avoid damaging the rhizomes.
3- Remove dirt and rinse in cool water.
4- Look for rot or disease, your healthy rhizomes don’t need that kind of negativity over winter ;) Hint: neither does your compost if you think it is disease — throw it away! Or else it could spread to other plants!
5- Dry out in a cold, dry, and dark place. Leave space for airflow between each bulb.
6- Once dry, store over winter in a paper bag or cardboard box, add peat moss and keep them spaced out.
7- Check in to see if they are getting too dry or shrinking, a light mist of water will prevent complete dry out.
8- Once the last frost has gone and the ground is warm you can replant in your garden. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent rot.
What are your calla lily care and planting tips?
Thank you for tuning in & happy Friday!
