Friday Flower Feature - Wave Pansies

With May approaching and the temperatures finally warming up it’s the perfect time to start thinking about getting your garden ready for the summer, and Wave Pansies are awesome for spring planting!! Here are some tips to get you started:

An easy way to get started is to just pick up some hanging baskets of Wave Pansies. The baskets can be hung, or transplanted into a large planter, or even into the ground! You can also create your own hanging basket by placing three 4-in. wave pansy plants in a 10-12 in. basket or container. Don’t overcrowd - less is more! These flowers love their food and water, and don’t like to share! Choose plants with even, bright green leaves that appear compact and robust.

After planting, water well and add a bit of diluted liquid fertilizer to give them a boost. Continue to water on any sunny, dry and/or windy day. A steady schedule of liquid fertilizer every other week through to the end of May will keep Wave Pansies healthier and producing more flowers.

These pansies can be planted with spiky grasses, Alyssum, Osteospermum, Dianthus or any other cool-season choices. They grow best in cooler weather, with as much sun as possible all day. They generally bloom from early spring through early summer. You won’t have to give up on your wave dreams once it gets too warm though - when warmer weather rolls around, just remove the wave pansies that are no longer blooming and wave petunias can be transplanted in!!

It’s always difficult to transition from summer to fall but we still have a lot of fun activities for you and your family!

Not everyone knows that Saskatoon Berries are closely related to the apple family. They’re high in fibre, protein and antioxidants and are considered a better source of calcium than red meats!

They’re Canada’s Superfruit and it doesn’t really matter if you eat them straight from the bush or in your favourite pie.

Picking Saskatoon Berries may take a lot of time, so here’s a super easy recipe for a sweet and delicious no bake cheesecake!

Ingredients:

  • Saskatoon berries (3 cups),
  • 1/4 cup sugar,
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice,
  • 2 cups whipping cream,
  • 16 oz cream cheese (2 bricks),
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice,
  • 1/2 cup sugar,
  • 30 crushed graham crackers,
  • 1/2 cup melted butter,
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Instructions:

  1. Whip your whipping cream and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whip the cream cheese with lemon juice and 1/4 sugar. Combine with the whipping cream.
  3. In a separate bowl, add three cups of saskatoon berries, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 tbsp lemon juice and blend. Mix cream cheese and saskatoon berry mixture together.
  4. Crush 30 graham crackers and mix with 1/2 cup butter and 1 tbsp sugar.  Press into the bottom of a cheesecake pan.

Spread the cheesecake mixture and chill in the refrigerator for about 4 hours. Enjoy!!!
