Friday Flower Feature - Persian Shield

This weeks’ Friday Flower Feature is a plant that doesn’t flower, but every flower needs accent foliage! And, the Persian Shield compliments flowers in the most wonderful way!

If you are looking for foliage to pair with your purple Wave Petunias, Sweet Peas, or Pansies, the Persian Shield’s green, purple, and a splash a silver foliage is a great option! Looking for wow factor? Combine Persian Shield with bright yellow and orange flowers. The contrasting colours pop off each other in the most wonderful way! Think orange and yellow Dahlia hybrid or Lantana. The Persian Shield also makes a beautiful houseplant year round offering tropical appeal and colour.

Since this plant likes humidity - we have a great tip for adding moisture into our dry Saskatchewan air:Take a plate or tray with a lip and add a thin layer of rocks and place the pot on top. Keep the plate or tray filled with water and the evaporation of the water will increase the humidity around the plant. The rocks will keep the roots from sitting in water and it can add to the decor!

Though it’s perfect in pots or flower beds you will want to plant Persian Shield in full sun to part shade.Since this plant likes well-drained soil - water once the first few inches of soil are dry.Regular fertilizing during spring through fall, every two weeks is highly recommended. We recommend a liquid fertilizer diluted by half. Fertilizing when you water will help prevent fertilizer burn. To achieve bushier foliage, pinch back stems to promote more growth and fullness.

This year's Persian Shield has us dreaming about colour combos! What are your planting and care tips??

It’s always difficult to transition from summer to fall but we still have a lot of fun activities for you and your family!

Not everyone knows that Saskatoon Berries are closely related to the apple family. They’re high in fibre, protein and antioxidants and are considered a better source of calcium than red meats!

They’re Canada’s Superfruit and it doesn’t really matter if you eat them straight from the bush or in your favourite pie.

Picking Saskatoon Berries may take a lot of time, so here’s a super easy recipe for a sweet and delicious no bake cheesecake!

Ingredients:

  • Saskatoon berries (3 cups),
  • 1/4 cup sugar,
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice,
  • 2 cups whipping cream,
  • 16 oz cream cheese (2 bricks),
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice,
  • 1/2 cup sugar,
  • 30 crushed graham crackers,
  • 1/2 cup melted butter,
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Instructions:

  1. Whip your whipping cream and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whip the cream cheese with lemon juice and 1/4 sugar. Combine with the whipping cream.
  3. In a separate bowl, add three cups of saskatoon berries, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 tbsp lemon juice and blend. Mix cream cheese and saskatoon berry mixture together.
  4. Crush 30 graham crackers and mix with 1/2 cup butter and 1 tbsp sugar.  Press into the bottom of a cheesecake pan.

Spread the cheesecake mixture and chill in the refrigerator for about 4 hours. Enjoy!!!
